Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

1. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Doyin Okupe, a former aide to the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan. This was made known by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.
According to him, it was the season of assault and harassment of PDP members.

2. The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, on Monday urged Nigerians to avoid desperate politicians by voting only credible candidates in 2019. Ayokunle made the remarks while briefing newsmen after a meeting with representatives of 14 Presidential Candidates in Abuja, on their plans for Nigerians and the church. He said that the church decided to reach out to the stakeholders and the presidential candidates to ask them their credentials for aspiring to the highest position in the country so the country and the church won’t be in trouble in 2019.

3. The Federal Government and the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached a partial agreement. Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, announced this after a reconciliation meeting on Monday in Abuja. Ngige said the meeting was aimed at finding ways of resolving the strike which commenced on Nov. 5. The strike has, however, not been called off.

4. The Enugu State Police Command on Monday commenced a full-scale investigation into alleged attempted assassination of the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Nigeria (AMEN), Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka. Mbaka on Dec. 6, alleged that there was an attempt to assassinate him. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, speaking on the incident ordered investigation into the matter.

5. Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of spreading fake news. He said that both reports that the account of the PDP vice presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was frozen, and that of the raid of the residence of PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s sons by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were all fake.

6. A chieftain of the Kwankwassiyya Group of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano, Brigadier-General Idris Bello Danbazzau (rtd), has defected to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). Danbazzau, who was an ardent follower of Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, on Monday declared his loyalty and support to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s administration, in a mini-rally that took place at the Kano Pillars’ stadium in Sabon Gari.

7. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected Senator Buruji Kashamu as its governorship candidate in Ogun State. This was contained in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Monday following a rally held by the Senator in Ijebu Igbo town in the state. PDP accused Kashamu of being desperate to destabilise it, describing the rally as “the height of ridicule”.

8. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) is to embark on a three-day nationwide protest from Dec. 17 to Dec. 19 to press home its demands, Mr Abdussobur Salaam, National Public Relations Officer, said in Abuja on Monday. According to Salaam, the protest is about the non-implementation of the agreement reached with the government.

9. A former National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bolaji Abdullahi, has shared his reasons the Muhammadu Buhari Nigerians voted into power in 2015 is not the same President at Aso Rock. Abdullahi, who was part of the mass defection from the ruling party, called on Nigerians to jump out of Buhari’s train, adding that the man presiding over the affairs of the nation today was not the leader Nigerians trooped out en masse to elect in 2015.

10. The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Kogi State chapter has directed its members to embark on an indefinite strike action over unpaid six months salaries by the state government. In a notice signed by the Secretary of the union, Comrade Sule Subaru, which was obtained by Arewa. Ng on Monday night, the union after its emergency meetings resolved to shut down the courts indefinitely with effect from Tuesday, December 11, 2018.
