The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged government authorities to provide subsidies for kidney disease treatment costs as the number of cases in the country has surged to 20 million.
Additionally, he called on the Nigerian Association of Nephrology to seek effective solutions to the escalating rates of kidney disease.

The Sultan shared his concerns during a meeting with the association’s president, Professor Adanze Asinobi, who, accompanied by other members, visited the palace on Thursday. He emphasized that the majority of those affected by kidney disease belong to economically disadvantaged families.
In her address, Asinobi revealed that 20 million Nigerians are currently battling kidney diseases. Despite the country having a sufficient number of medical professionals to manage these cases, she cited a lack of awareness among the population and insufficient healthcare facilities in many rural and urban areas as primary challenges.
In recognition of his support, the Nigerian Association of Nephrology awarded the Sultan the Fellowship of the National Association of Nephrology and appointed him as the organization’s patron.
