Osun rerun: Nigerians react as INEC declares Oyetola winner

Nigerians have reacted to the outcome of the Osun State governorship election, with the All Progressive Congress, APC, candidate Gboyega Oyetola beating Adeleke Ademola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

DAILY POST had reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday declared the candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the gubernatorial election in Osun State.

The State Returning Officer, Prof. Joseph Adeola Afuwape said Oyetola garnered 255,505 votes to defeat his main rival, Senator Ademola Adeleke who polled 255,023 votes.

Reacting to PDP’s defeat, some Nigerians while accusing the APC of rigging the election, expressed disappointment with the entire exercise.

However, others claimed the election was free and fair.

Here are some comments gathered by DAILY POST:

@OmosuleId, ‘Have we ever had an election in Nigeria? Now the film is glaring and everyone is on their heels not to see the end of it. Not only #OsunRerun Is the movie ,I am just ashamed when youth participate in these when we should be asking them to leave the seat for us ..I fear for 2019‏

@Gbemi1, “Posterity won’t forget the grand thievery that just occurred in the #OsunRerun elections. It’s a painful defeat but justice must and will prevail. #Adeleke’s mandate must be restored!”

@enyola, “At least, we now know that this govt is NOT interested in anything credible, free or fair. The #OsunRerun is a clear indicator of what we should expect in 2019. They knew they couldn’t do it directly with @inecNigeria, so they used the security agencies to rig it out. What a shame!”

@itzleothagreat, “Thursday, 27th of September 2018 Democracy was buried by an electoral body in Nigeria, under the authority of a political party in conjunction with some security forces and hoodlums. Slowly but surely, true democracy will germinate & flourish.”

@coded336, “INEC is a disgrace. No need to cast any vote in 2019. The security forces and electoral commission are allies of the ruling party and they’ve robbed the people of their mandate.”

@jamesogunjibi, “Today in history: Democracy was assassinated in Nigeria. Hitmen: Adams Oshiomole, Muhammadu Buhari, Rauf Aregbesola, Bola Tinubu, Men of the Nigeria Police Force: Survivors: Osun state indigenes who are about to be demoted from half salary status to no salary status.”

@goodyemi, “The people that lost out in this #OsunReRun are the Osun indigene they will suffer like mad. Suffer suffer for world.”

@Mhiz_midee,”What happened today has showed us exactly what will happen in 2019..Baba will just enter..FIAM..sometimes they make it look like we disturb ourselves to go vote. This is a pure abuse of power. Democracy Inconclusive.”

@Kany_10, “This INEC returning officer is a fraud. All other Party agents of even parties that I don’t know their national headquarters were against the PDP. This is what more money can do. Meanwhile, Osun civil servants are owed over 15 months salaries. More sufferings for Osun people.”
