NRC decry increasing rate of vandalism on Port Harcourt-Aba rail line

The Nigeria Railway Corporation has decried increasing vandalism on tracks in the Port Harcourt-Aba rail lines.

This appears to have led to the temporary stoppage of train services on the rail line.

Public Relations Officer of the NRC in Port Harcourt, Samuel Atoyebi who made this known on Friday said the Corporation has exhausted all spare tracks kept to replace vandalized rail tracks causing the current lack of the materials.

He also noted that the date for the resumption of train services has remained uncertain due to the missing rail tracks.

He said the latest attack on the rail line took place two weeks ago which caused the train to derail at Umuzohia area of Oyigbo in Rivers State, a situation he said was “so dangerous” because of the bushy nature of the area.

Narrating the incident he said “Although there has been vandalisation of our track but about two Saturdays ago, the train was going to Aba at about 9:30 and unknown to the driver he ran into a particular portion where some clips were removed and through the vibration of the train the shaft now got expanded and the train derailed.

Speaking on the reported suspension of train service in the rail line, Atoyebi said “we are not suspending train services only that with the rate of the vandals, we have exhausted all the materials and we are now sourcing new ones. Once we get these materials, we will go back”

Atoyebi also appealed to security agencies to assist in securing the rail tracks noting that passengers are now experiencing difficulties travelling from Port Harcourt to Abia State.
