Health expert, other stakeholders decry increased maternal, newborn deaths

President, World Hepatitis Alliance, Dr. Danjuma Adda, has again raised an alarm over the increasing rate of maternal and newborn mortality across Nigeria and the world at large.

Speaking on Friday in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State at the World Patient Safety Day, he expressed sadness at the way and manner maternal and newborn issues are being handled by those in leadership positions with kid gloves.

Adda who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Initiative and Development (CFID) expressed worry over the attitude of those thrust with the responsibility of making health facilities available to the people and how they drag their feet

He said nearly 5,400 stillbirths occur on a daily basis across the globe.

He said while 810 women lose their lives daily during childbirth, 6,700 newborns deaths are recorded on daily basis.

He said there was a need for relevant stakeholders to sensitize women especially those in the rural areas on the importance of accessing anti-natal services.

Adda said most of the lives can be saved through the provision of safe care, observed with dismay that “most women do not have access to the health care and sexual health education services.

The Galadima of Muri Emirate, Abba Tukur Abba in his remarks stressed the need for all and sundry, irrespective of religious and cultural beliefs to motivate pregnant women in their domains to always visit health facilities.

He urged the media to stand tall by dispelling the myths and misconceptions surrounding family planning, childbirth spacing as that will go a long way in addressing maternal and newborns mortality.

Some women group at the event, the National Council of Women’s Society (NCWS), Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) and the Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) also expressed their commitments to thread extra legitimate paths to reach out to women across the state with messages of childbirth spacing.

They, however, asked the federal government to address maternal and newborns mortality by putting in place required health facilities in the entire primary health centres spread across the state.
