‘Give us an agency to see to our welfare’ – Persons with Disability beg Oyetola

Persons living with disabilities in Osun State have appealed to Governor Gboyega Oyetola to establish an agency that will directly look after their welfare and protection.

The body also asked the state House of Assembly to speedily pass the People Living with Disability Bill which is under consideration, noting that the bill could also serve as an instrumentality of achieving the creation of the agency.

They also sought a forty percent quota in the ongoing teachers’ recruitment in the state.

The organisation made this call during a chat with the Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye during a program tagged; Governor’s Family Meeting organised by the aide.

The spokesperson of People Living with Disability in Olaoluwa Local Government, Rahman Rauf, who made the appeal described the creation of the agency as a necessity which the government must embrace, as it would be a step in furtherance of the current recognition that Oyetola’s administration is giving to them as a community.

Rauf said, “We believe if the agency is created it will serve as an institutional mechanism of achieving a full-fledged implementation of the United Nations Convention for People Living with Disability, as it aims at promoting, protecting and ensuring the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, as well as promoting respect for their inherent dignity.

Meanwhile, he also entreated the state government to always earmark quota for their community in every recruitment process.

In his remarks, Oyintiloye noted the current administration believes that the organisation deserve the same right and privileges as other citizens, noting that the government would not relent in making policies and programmes that would directly affect their lives positively.
