Declare June 12 annulment treasonable offence – Balarabe Musa tells Buhari

Former Governor of old Kaduna State, Alh. Balarebe Abdulkadir Musa, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to unearth what led to the annulment of June 12, 1993 election and declare such action a treasonable offence.

He said the President must go a step further beyond declaring June 12 as a Democracy Day, but to know why the election was annulled with a view to punish those involved.

Balarebe Musa, while briefing newsman in his residence in Kaduna said, “Those who masterminded the annulment of the election should be described and recognised as unpatriotic fellows.”

According to him, annulment of June 12 has done more damage to the country than good, saying that question on why the election was annulled must be answered.

“Every other election that comes after the June 12, 1993 were never free, fair and credible.

“The ghost of June 12 will continue to hurt the country if the government fail to rise and correct the mistake of past,” he said.

He explained that the democracy we have today in Nigeria has not meet the yearnings of Nigerians in anyway.

“Democracy is the supreme will of the people, and for the fact that we have twenty years of uninterrupted democracy does not mean we have supreme will of the people,” he said.

Balarebe further explained that it is the supreme will of the people means democracy that election must be free, fair and credible, adding that Nigeria should not be judged as a nation that practices true democracy.

While commending Buhari for recognizing June 12, he maintained that the transition between the then military head of state, Abdulsalam Abubakar to former President Olusegun Obasanjo was not true democracy.

“From the past administration to the present administration, the elections that brought them in were not the true reflection of the peoples’ will and therefore they are fraud,” he noted.

While speaking on how Nigeria can sustain its democracy, he said, “The political class must always respect the will of the people by allowing free, fair and credible elections that will lead to a legitimate government prevail.”
