2019: Why amended Electoral Act wouldn’t have been effective even if Buhari assented – Ndoma-Egba

Former Senate leader, now the Chairman of NDDC, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba has stated that even if President Muhammadu Buhari signed the amended Electoral Act, it would not take effect as being a member of ECOWAS restrained Nigeria from implementing it.

“We are less than three month to elections, Nigeria is a signatory to the protocol on election and good governance in ECOWAS, that means that you cannot amend an electoral act anywhere of a member states less than six Months to an election, so even if the President sign the bill into law, Nigeria is a signatory to that protocol of ECOWAS.

“It cannot come into effect, we are bound by it. You can’t change the goal post, elections are sensitive process, even if the President signs it, I don’t see it under the subsisting protocol that Nigeria is signatory coming into effect until after the next elections.”

He said the implication of not signing the bill is that it is not yet a law under the constitution, adding that the National Assembly still has an opportunity to pass it into a law by overriding the veto of the President by getting 2/3 of the membership of both houses not 2/3 of those present and sitting

On the arming of youths in preparation for the forthcoming elections, the Senator, who is Senatorial candidate for Central Senatorial district, said “It would be sad if our youths are being militarized. Are those arming them also arming their children? If they don’t do that, it is very very unfair.

“Elections should not be warfare, it is a contest, elections is no longer a carry go,” he stated. And on communal clashes in his central senatorial district, Senator Ndoma-Egba said “Communal clashes are unfortunate”.

“It is a pity that clashes are becoming recurrent. In fact as I leave here, I am going to engage the leadership of Bahomono in Abi LGA, the clashes have been on and on but it is just the scale and magnitude has increased. One would have expected that by now government would have found a solution, a template to deal with the crisis and now that it is coming on great magnitudes,” he stated.
