10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mrs. Jumoke Akinjide, and two other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State would be re-arraigned in court next month by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC is claiming that the defendants received money from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the build-up to the 2015 general elections. The money is believed to be fraudulently shared to party chieftains.

2. Bettie Jennifer, the wife of Ghanaian actor, Chris Attoh has been shot dead while leaving her office in Maryland in the United States of America. Reports claim she was shot in the head by a gunman on Friday evening around 5 pm and was pronounced dead when police arrived the scene of the crime. It was reported that Bettie left the office in the 6300 block of Ivy Lane and was walking to her car when a man armed with a handgun and shut her when she made an attempt to run.

3. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released results of candidates who sat for the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The 2019 UTME was conducted from April 11 to April 18 and over 1.8 million candidates registered for it. The board also withheld the results of 34,120 candidates for various infractions. This was made know by, JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede who spoke to newsmen on Saturday in Abuja.

4. A Nigerian lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has dragged President Muhammadu Buhari to court for failing to hand over to the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo. Buhari had on April 24 2019, left the country for what he described as a ‘private visit.’ The suit number FHC/L/CS/763/2019, was filed before a Federal High Court in Lagos. Effiong is asking the Court to determine whether the president can embark on such a trip without going through the necessary constitutional procedures.

5. Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Saturday presented letters of appointment to four new first-class Emirs in the State. Ganduje presented the letters on Saturday, during a ceremony held at the state capital. Those presented with the letters of appointment include Aminu Ado Bayero, the son of Late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, as the Emir of Bichi; Ibrahim Abulkadir as the Emir of Gaya; Tafida Abubakar as the Emir of Rano and Abubakar Ibrahim II as the Emir of Karaye. Ganduje during the presentation said the creation of an additional four Emirates will make the Kano traditional system more efficient.

6. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists plying the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to use alternative routes due to ongoing rehabilitation work. Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, gave the advice in a statement in Abuja on Saturday. He said it is due to the ongoing rehabilitation work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which has necessitated the construction company, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, to erect barriers around the Magboro area of the corridor, to enable them lay asphalt on that stretch of the road.

7. Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has insisted that he does not own any bank accounts or properties abroad. Jonathan stated this in a statement issued on Saturday by his media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, in reaction to the report that claimed that lawyers representing the Federal Government, in a London court accused him of accepting bribes in order “to broker a $1.3 billion oil deal eight years ago”. He dismissed the report on the controversial Malabu oil deal, as a recycled falsehood that is blatantly dishonest, cheap and predictable.

8. Youths in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, have reportedly killed a notorious criminal known as One Man Squad, who before his death allegedly terrorised the community. Spokesman of Benue Police Command, DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident in Makurdi. She said that the incident took place on Friday evening in Gboko, but added that the police was yet to properly identify him, his real name or place of origin.

9. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, has said it was shocked that some persons and groups have decided to serve as willing tools of their enemy in the irrational attempt to sabotage the will of Biafran people on the May 30 sit-at-home order. The group vowed that no ‘Abuja-sponsored’ propaganda will stop it. The IPOB warned that such persons will have themselves to blame at the appointed time when the anger of the people will descend on them.

10. The Presidency has admonished the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to stop dragging it into their current alleged sponsored media smear campaign against the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa. This was contained in a statement on Saturday by a presidential aide, Garba Shehu. It said reports claiming that an agency of the government, the Department of State Services, DSS, has indicted Bulkachuwa of corruption are the latest sponsored campaign aimed at causing disaffection between the Executive and the Judiciary, the two arms of government that had operated smoothly under the present dispensation.
