World Water Day: 58% of residents of Minna lacks water – Commissioner

Niger State Commissioner for Water Resources and Dam Development, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman says about 58 per cent of residents of Minna, Niger state Capital lack water supply to their homes.
He said the lack of water supply to many homes in the Minna metropolis is worrisome despite efforts and resources being put in place by the Niger State government to ensure the availability of water for people across the state.
Speaking to newsmen to commemorate the World Water Day in Minna, Suleiman said inspite of the enormous resources injected into the water sector, residents of Minna still suffer from a lack of water supply.
“The lack of water supply to many homes in Minna metropolis is worrisome. This is despite the efforts and resources being put in place by the Niger State government to ensure the availability of water for people across the state.”
He, however, noted that the Ministry has made some achievement in improving water supply from 17% to 42% to the people, adding that the capacity utilization of the state water board has been raised to 50percent.
Suleiman lamented that a lot of residents of the state do not value water as they are careless in taking care of the service pipes that connect water to homes.
Speaking about the theme of the 2021 World Water Day, ‘Valuing Water’, the Commissioner said valuing water entails respecting water sources, natural water resources, ecosystems, water infrastructure, water services, sanitation and health services.
He further said the state government is adopting the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach that will reflect and balance a diverse range of interests, including households, agriculture, industry, business and the natural environment.
