Reps to probe NYSC’s kidnapping tips, security pamphlet

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the level of security provided by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to corps members.

The Green Chamber mandated the Committee on Youth Development to investigate the pamphlet and assess the level of security provided to corps members.

The decision to embark on the investigation was sequel to a motion moved by the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu on Tuesday.

It would be recalled that the controversial NYSC security tips pamphlet surfaced on social media over the weekend. The pamphlets among other things contained tips for corps members on ransom payment.

Although the NYSC initially denied the content of the pamphlet, it accepted ownership of the document.

In his motion, Mr Elumelu said the advice means “a complete collapse in the architectural system of the country’s security forces and a major worry for friends and family as to why their children should be allowed to participate in this compulsory exercise.”

He said the “insertion of such a clause by the NYSC in its security tips manual portrays the inability of the government to provide security on the highways as well as a surrender by the government to kidnappers and bandits.”

Speaking on the motion, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabimila said he was informed that the NYSC already disowned the insertion.

However, Elumelu insisted that he has a copy of the pamphlet obtained from the NYSC.

The motion was taken without debate.
