Protest as Ogun poly imposes N20,000 registration fee on students

Students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday blocked the entrance of the institution to protest the imposition of N20,000 on them as registration fee.

The students said the polytechnic has also increased tuition fees in a nation’s economy they described as harsh and unfriendly.

In their hundreds, students stormed the polytechnic gate, denying lecturers and other staffers access to the premises.

The protest, DAILY POST learnt, also disrupted the ongoing second-semester examination, as students who wanted to sit exams could find their way into the school.

Speaking on behalf of the protesting students, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Chairman in Ogun State, Damilola Simeon, asked that all increased fees be immediately reversed while all newly introduced fees are abolished.

Simeon alleged that the Rector of MAPOLY, Dr Adeoye Odedeji, was “milking” the students by increasing school fees and introducing illegal charges.

While calling for the investigation of the management by the state government, the NANS leader maintained that Monday’s peaceful demonstration was “to protest against the mismanagement, corruption and inhumane policies in MAPOLY.

“We demand that a reversal should be made on all increased and newly introduced fees.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of MAPOLY, Yemi Ajibola, said he would revert, but he was yet to do so at the time of filing this report.
