Ondo bank robbery: NUJ mourns, says killing of popular journalist, Afuye callous

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ondo State chapter, has described as callous, the killing of a popular journalist in the state, Olubunmi Afuye, popularly known as ‘Bumbam’ by armed robbers.

This was just as the union declared seven days of mourning in honour of the deceased who was among those killed by armed robbers in the state during an attack on a bank.

According to the union, it was a wicked and unforgivable act on the part of the robbers who attacked a branch of the United Bank for Africa, UBA, at Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore Local Government Area of the state for cutting short the life of Afuye.

Afuye, who had newly taken up an appointment at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, as the institution’s Public Relations Officer, PRO, after resigning from the state-owned radio, Orange fm, was said to have ran into the robbers while on his way from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, where he had gone to officiate an event.

While describing the sudden demise of Afuye as ‘Sunset at Noon’ in the state’s journalism fraternity, the NUJ in a statement signed by the chapel’s Chairman, Adetona Aderoboye and Secretary, Leke Adegbite, described the deceased journalist as a bright, cerebral and versatile colleague.

While calling on security operatives to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous crime were apprehended, the union said Afuye’s huge contributions to the Ondo NUJ and unionism in the state would be greatly missed.

In the statement, the union equally condoled with Afuye’s family as well as the families and colleagues of the policeman and motorcyclist killed in the bank robbery

“We will surely miss Bunmi’s huge contributions to Ondo NUJ and unionism in the state as he anchored last December’s NUJ Press Week and this year’s Workers’ Day celebrations free of charge while many of our members had benefited from his media expertise.

“We equally condole families and colleagues of the policeman and Motorcyclist killed in the bank robbery.

“While declaring seven days of mourning in honour of our slain member popularly known as “BUMBAM”, Ondo NUJ demands that security operatives should do everything humanly possible to bring the perpetrators of the heinous act to justice within shortest time.”
