FA Cup: Alan Shearer names Manchester United player to blame for 3-1 defeat to Leicester

Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer, has blamed Anthony Martial for Manchester United’s FA Cup exit to Leicester City on Sunday.

The former England striker said he found watching the French World Cup winner ‘frustrating’, adding that the forward lacks the ‘hunger’ to be a No. 9.

Goals from Kelechi Iheanacho (2) and Youri Tielemans helped Leicester beat United 3-1, sent them out of the FA Cup and ended their hopes of domestic silverware this season.

A consolation goal from Greenwood could not stop Leicester from booking their place in the semi-finals where they will now face Southampton.

Shearer felt Martial was not offering enough in the striker role, insisting that, “He was very isolated but then sometimes you need help off your team-mates but you can also help yourself by putting yourself in better positions,” he told BBC Sport.

“It was a really frustrating performance for him because when his team-mates are looking for options from him, for him to either come short to be the link-up play, a lot of the time I’m thinking, ‘Come on, help’.

“Paul Pogba is looking for some help, he needs a run off the forward, there’s no one there.

“I don’t think he’s a nine. He doesn’t look comfortable in the nine position. He doesn’t look as if he’s got that hunger to score as many goals as he could and should. It was a frustrating performance.

“In my opinion Man United don’t have a No. 9. Edinson Cavani, that’s it. The rest are very good coming in from the left, off the right but Martial is not a centre-forward. Absolutely not. 100%.”

The Europa is now Manchester United’s only hope of winning a title this season. They progressed to the quarter-finals on Thursday after beating AC Milan 2-1 on aggregate.
