EPL: What has surprised me most about Man Utd players – Rangnick

Manchester United boss, Ralf Rangnick, has admitted that he has been ‘surprised’ at how his players have taken his ideas on board.

Rangnick was appointed Man United’s interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked last month.

The German tactician made eleven changes for their UEFA Champions League 1-1 draw with Young Boys on Wednesday.

That means Rangnick has already presented opportunities to the majority of his Man United squad, who have bought into his revolutionary methods and exceeded his high expectations in the process.

The 63-year-old is famed for a ‘gegenpressing’ style and has installed his trademark 4-2-2-2 formation with a higher press.

“I was more than surprised with the way the players were buying into that proactive kind of football; not only in the games but also in training,” Rangnick told Sky Sports.

“They were asking questions. They were interested in how and what they should do in what situation.

“The passing skills – if I compare that to Germany – are on a higher level. Now it’s about making use of that and playing as often as possible vertically; not too many squads passes, not too many backs passes.”
