7th Abia Assembly: Why we endorsed Theodore Orji’s son, Chinedum as next Speaker – PDP member- elect, Uzosike

A Peoples Democratic Party chieftain and the member-elect for Umuahia South constituency of Abia State, Barrister Jerry Uzosike, has explained why the newly twelve members-elect endorsed the current majority leader, Hon. Chinedum Orji, as next Speaker of the soon-to-be-inaugurated 7th Abia House of Assembly.

DAILY POST reported that the 12 newly elected members of the Abia State House of Assembly, on Wednesday announced their preferred candidate for the Speakership position.

A source, who attended the meeting, told our correspondent that the members, who cut across political parties, endorsed Hon. Chinedum Orji (PDP) the current Majority leader.

Chinedum is the first son of former Governor and current Senator representing Abia central senatorial district, Theodore Orji.

This came amid battle over who emerges as successor to incumbent Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, who is also in the race.

But, speaking with newsmen in a press conference held in Umuahia, the state capital, on Thursday, Uzosike, pointed out that the newly twelve members-elect for the seventh Assembly, after thorough assessment and wide consultations, arrived at the decision, for the sake of equity and justice.

According to lawyer, “We considered the characters of those jostling for the Abia Speakership position for incoming assembly. We also considered equity. And having considered all these, we (newly members-elect), unanimously endorsed Honorable Chinedum Orji, the current majority of the present sixth state Assembly, to lead us in the coming seventh house.

“We also believe that for the interest of equity, Ikwuano/Umuahia extractions of Abia central senatorial zone, should be allowed and supported to occupy the post of the Speaker of the upcoming assembly. Honorable Chinedum Orji’s endorsement is cut across party lines.

“APC, APGA and PDP lawmakers-elect, all agreed and resolved to endorse Orji for the seat. Because he has been tested and trusted in leadership. He has the capacity and experiences to lead us. And we are hopeful that returning members in the seventh Abia House of Assembly, we also follow suit.”
