NOA calls for action against dealers, consumers of hard drugs in Imo

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), has charged community leaders and key stakeholders in Imo State to sanction all those who are complicit in the distribution of illicit drugs.

NOA said persons, who perpetrate political thuggery, kidnapping, rape, religious and violent extremism often saturate themselves with hard drugs, effectively deadening their humanity.

The government agency made the call on Wednesday through it state Director, Mr. Nazzy Njoku in an address at a town hall meeting on national security sensitisation and reorientation against social vices in Owerri, Imo State capital.

NOA said the unbridled use of hard drugs is the root of most criminalities and social vices distorting our sound dreams for a great nation.

The NOA Director called for surveillance in every community to curb the drug abuse menace noting that it had led to other social vices such as kidnapping, rape and religious extremism.

He stated that the meeting was convened to deconstruct and fault forces mitigating against the national and societal good in tandem with NOA’s newly developed strategic programme plan.

He noted that part of the plan is to catch the attention of the youth and imbue in them national core values through newly formed “integrity clubs” in schools.

The director said the clubs will serve as a sustained reorientation measure to keep students and youths at speed with ethical values and draw them away from destruction.

“I, therefore, join all other voices of reason in calling on town unions and traditional rulers to move against traffickers and consumers of hard drugs.

“They should mount surveillance in the communities and sanction all that are complicit in the social harm to forestall an explosion which will derail our peaceful society.”

Presenting a paper titled the effect of drug abuse on citizens and national development, the State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr Reuben Apeh also called for aggressive sensitisation.

Apeh, who was represented by the Commander of Narcotics, Mr Osamudiamen Sunday said drug abuse control committees should be introduced in every community.

He said this would help nip the problem in the bud and ensure resources which should be used for national development are not diverted to damage control.

Earlier, the Controller of Owerri Correctional Centre, Mr Kingsley Njoku also urged parents to provide good examples to their children and wards to ensure they don’t get derailed.

Njoku who was represented by the Assistant Controller of Prisons, Mr Promise Onyeike also called for guidance and counselling units in schools to support the efforts of parents.
