Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Tuesday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers:

1. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday, confirmed 575 new cases of COVID-19 in the country.
With the latest figure, there are now 29, 286 confirmed cases and 654 deaths in the country.

2. Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, said he has recovered from COVID-19. The governor confirmed his latest health status on Monday while briefing reporters at the Government House in Akure, the state capital.

3. Ibrahim Magu, Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was on Monday invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations that he owns four properties. He was also alleged to have transferred funds abroad through a third party.

4. Medical doctors at the Infectious Disease Hospital, IDH, Akure, Ondo State have stopped attending to patients admitted at the facility, following the increasing figures of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Sunshine State. The doctors under the aegis of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners, NAGGMDP, blamed the state government led by Rotimi Akeredolue, on the manner at which the COVID-19 pandemic was being handled in the state.

5. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will now commence on the 4th of August.
The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajuiba, who disclosed this on Monday during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, further explained that a decision on when the National Examinations Council, NECO, National Business and Technical Examinations Board, NABTEB, will be taken after the WASSCE.

6. The death has been announced of Inuwa Abdulkadir, former Vice Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Abdulkadir, 54, passed away Monday morning at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

7. The Secretary to Ondo State Government, SSG, Ifedayo Abegunde has resigned his appointment from the government of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Abegunde who confirmed his resignation on Monday morning, added that his next line of actions politically would be communicated within the next 24 hours.

8. Following the resignation of Ifedayo Abegunde as Secretary to Ondo State Government, SSG, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has appointed Hon. Temitayo Oluwatuyi “Tukana” as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). Akeredolu while confirming the new appointment asked Oluwatuyi to resume immediately.

9. The former Secretary to Ondo State Government, SSG, Ifedayo Abegunde has disclosed that his erstwhile principal, Rotimi Akeredolu lost the 2016 governorship election to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Eyitayo Jegede. According to him, it was through his power and that of some other APC pillars that made INEC to declare Akeredolu governor after he had lost.

10. The Police Service Commission has dismissed ten senior police officers and reduced the rank of eight others at its 8th Plenary Meeting, which spanned three weeks and ended on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. In a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations of the service, the dismissed officers included one Superintendent of Police (SP), five Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) and four Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP).
