The Federal Government has announced that Monday will be a public holiday in honor of the June 12 Democracy Day. This declaration was made by Dr Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, in a statement released on Thursday.
The government, extending its congratulations to Nigerians on this occasion, acknowledged the country’s democratic journey has been marked by both challenging and smooth times, akin to experiences in many other nations.
“Yet, the ship of State, its institutions, and most importantly, the Nigerian people, have continued to uphold the principles of democratic governance,” the statement affirmed.
“On this memorable occasion, Nigerians and friends of Nigeria are thus invited to appreciate the strides that have been made, celebrate the milestones achieved, and anticipate a brighter future for our democracy.”
The Permanent Secretary ended the statement with well wishes, saying, “The Permanent Secretary wishes all Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day celebration.”
It should be noted that Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari had established June 12 as Democracy Day during his second and final term in office. Prior to this, Democracy Day was commemorated on May 29.
