The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Dr. Nasiru Idris, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner of the Kebbi State Governorship Election. The returning officer for the election, Professor Sa’idu Yusuf, stated that the APC candidate emerged victorious with 409,225 votes, defeating his rival Aminu Bande of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 360,940 votes.
Upon announcing the results, the returning officer, Professor Yusuf, declared, “I, Sa’idu Yusuf, returning officer of the Kebbi State Governorship Election, hereby announce Nasiru Idris of the APC as the winner of the governorship election, having received a total of 409,225 votes and meeting the requirements of the law.”
It’s worth noting that the initial governorship election took place on March 18 but was declared inconclusive by INEC due to incidents of violence and over-voting. The supplementary election saw a total of 95,897 registered voters, with 40,186 voters accredited. The APC acquired 20,967 votes, while the PDP trailed with 17,960 votes.
The returning officer disclosed that the APC’s total vote count reached 409,225, compared to the PDP’s 360,940. A total of 781,478 valid votes were cast, with 19,082 rejected votes, bringing the overall number of votes to 800,560.
In total, 39,244 valid votes were recorded in the election, along with 878 rejected votes, resulting in a final tally of 40,122 votes cast. INEC National Publicity and Voters Education Commissioner, Mr. Festus Okoye, expressed confidence in the results of the supplementary election in Kebbi, stating that it demonstrated INEC’s ability to conduct a fair and transparent process.
He added, “We hope to build on this and improve on the achievements recorded in Kebbi State. We are confident that the people of Kebbi State will be pleased with the process that led to the election of their governor.”
