The Police in Ogun State on Monday arrested three suspected cultists in Abeokuta, the State capital.
The suspected cultists were nabbed while trying to force their way into the venue of an event organized by some graduating students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, the police said.
The Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, identified the suspects as Abdul Jelili, a resident of Agura street, Enugada, Abeokuta; Oluwatosin Olanrewaju, from Saraki Adigbe, also in Abeokuta and Yussuf Odesanya, who resides at Moses Ajulo street, Alakuko Lagos State.
Oyeyemi said they were arrested while security agents were searching for those attending a ‘signout’ program organised by the graduating students at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
According to him, Abdul Jelili was first to be arrested with a locally-made pistol loaded with a live cartridge, while he was trying to force his way into the venue.
“The DPO of Kemta division, CSP Sunday Opebiyi who was at the scene with his men then sighted the duo of Oluwatosin Olanrewaju and Yussuf Odesanya, who were moving in a suspicious manner and he ordered that they be searched as well. On searching the bag with them, another locally made pistol and five live cartridges were recovered therein,” Oyeyemi explained.
While being interrogated, the three suspects, who are not students, could not give a satisfactory account of their mission and how they came about the guns, it was said.
The police image maker told newsmen that preliminary investigation had revealed that the suspects are part of the hoodlums terrorizing Abeokuta in recent times.
“They were said to be connected with a series of armed robbery and cult-related cases in the town,” Oyeyemi stated.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has directed the transfer of the suspects to state CIID for discreet investigation.
