In Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa, a 35-year-old woman named Maryam Aminu set herself on fire after accusing her boyfriend of cheating. Mr. Adamu Shehu, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state, confirmed the incident to the press on Thursday in Dutse.
Shehu reported that the event took place around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday in the Gindin Dinya area of Dutse. Preliminary investigations indicate that Aminu doused herself with petrol and set herself ablaze. People in the neighborhood managed to extinguish the flames and rescue her.
Although the exact cause of the incident is still unclear, it is believed to be linked to Aminu’s relationship with her 40-year-old boyfriend, Ibrahim Haruna. The woman sustained second-degree burns and is currently receiving medical treatment at the General Hospital in Dutse.
An eyewitness, Muhammad Yusif, explained that Aminu became enraged when she discovered that her boyfriend had visited another woman. Describing Aminu as a jealous commercial sex worker living in the neighborhood, Yusif said, “The lady suspected that her boyfriend went to see another woman and attempted to commit suicide.”
