FG, Anambra govt to fix failed portion of Onitsha, Owerri road

The federal and Anambra State governments have promised to fix the failed portion of the Onitsha-Owerri express road in Onitsha Anambra State.

The federal highway, just in front of the metallurgical institute had days back been completely cut off by erosion, causing hardship for travellers using the road.

The Federal Comptroller of Works, Anambra State, Mr Ajani Adeyemo who inspected the road on Wednesday in the company of the state commissioner for Works, Mr Marcel Ifejiofor said the federal and state governments would fix the road within three days.

Ajani said: “The federal government has deployed the services of Julius Berger Construction Company to put the road back to use.

“They (Julius Berger) will fix the road within three days. The failure of this road is an unfortunate incident, and this is caused by blockage of natural flood channel with buildings and blocked drainage in the area which led to washing off of the earth underneath.”

The Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Marcel Ifejiofor while describing the incident as very unfortunate, regretted the hardship the situation has caused Anambra people.

He thanked the federal government for responding promptly as the situation demanded.

Ifejiofor cautioned those who are in the habit of dumping debris inside the drainages to desist from doing so, saying the repercussions are devastating.
