EPL: Thiago Silva surpasses Drogba’s record as Reece equals Obi Mikel’s

Chelsea defender, Thiago Silva, on Saturday surpassed the club’s legend Didier Drogba’s record as the oldest Blues player to score in a Premier League match against West Ham United.

Also, another Chelsea defender, Reece James, became the youngest player to start 50 league matches for the west London club since former Blues midfielder, John Obi Mikel, after featuring for Thomas Tuchel’s side against West Ham.

Chelsea lost 3-2 to West Ham at the London Stadium, following three goals from Manuel Lanzini, Jarrod Bowen, Arthur Masuaku.

Silva and Mason Mount scored a goal each for the Champions League holders.

Silva’s goal against West Ham was his second league goal of the season at the age of 37 years and 73 days, surpassing Drogba’s record when he scored at the age of 37 years, 49 days against Leicester City in April 2015.

James, on the other hand, became the youngest Chelsea player to start 50 Premier League matches since Mikel in January 2009.

Mikel reached the half-century mark at the age of 21 years, 264 days, while James achieved the feat on Saturday at 21 years and 361 days.

Meanwhile, the defeat to West Ham ended Chelsea’s 12-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.
