£32m of precious metals stolen by armed men in sophisticated heist

Armed men disguised as police officers have stolen 750kg of precious metals in a sophisticated heist at a Brazilian airport.

The thieves bypassed the security system at Sao Paulo’s main international airport – known as GRU – by using two cars that looked like police patrol vehicles.

The eight men were dressed as police officers, covered their faces and carried weapons, Globo TV reported.

Gold destined for Zurich and New York was taken.

The haul was estimated to have been worth $40m (£32m).

There were no injuries during the raid, but a police officer said an airport worker and eight members of his family – including four children – were held hostage for 12 hours.

The two vehicles were found abandoned around 12 miles from the airport but police are still looking for the stolen gold.
