2019 May Day: Gov. Okowa speaks on paying Delta civil servants N30,000 new minimum wage

The Delta State Governor, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, has reiterated his commitment to pay the newly approved N30,000 minimum wage recently approved by the Federal Government.

Governor spoke at the 2019 May Day Celebration held at the St. Patrick’s College, Asaba.

While commending the labour unions for the good working relationship in the state, Governor Okowa said they should sustain the relationship and help keep the peace in the State.

He also said workers should rededicate themselves to the workforce of the state.

Governor Okowa also ordered that some of the workers, who were dropped from the civil service at the entry of his administration be recalled.

He said the committee task with the responsibility for the recall of the workers must pass an “integrity test” in doing so.

Governor Okowa also faulted members of the committee for imputing the names of their candidates who were initially not on the list.

“You must stop it and do what’s right to pass the integrity test,” he warned.

Earlier, the Delta State Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Goodluck Ofobruku and his Trade Union Congress, TUC, counterpart, Michale Chinedu Nwobodo, urged the Governor Okowa to implement the new minimum wage.

Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku of the NLC said, “While your colleagues from other state owe workers 38 months salary, not promoting workers, rationalized workers, you have promised not to retrench anybody on first line charge.

He also noted that the governor has paid pensioners up to date amongst others.
