Bayelsa State Police Command said it has recovered the corpse of a victim, Victor Anozie Alex, allegedly killed by suspected herdsmen in Okumoni community of Okordia clan, in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The body was reportedly found in the bush after a team of local residents combed the bush in search of missing members of the community on Monday after herdsmen’s attack.
The decomposed body of Alex, 23, a native of Kogi State, brings the number of casualties to three.
It was earlier reported that two chiefs from Zarama and Okumoni community, both of Okordia clan, were allegedly killed while several others were injured in the attack by rampaging herdsmen last week.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, told DAILY POST the Divisional Police Officer, Biseni Division, with other tactical operatives evacuated the corpse of the deceased who was allegedly killed by herdsmen during the attack.
Police operatives are currently combing the forest and surrounding environs, he further said.
A reliable source in the community said the body of the deceased was found by a posse that went in search of some missing persons from the community.
According to him: “While the herdsmen were shooting sporadically, people ran in different directions into the bush for safety; that would have been when they killed him without anyone noticing.”
The source, who preferred to be anonymous, further said: “We are still using this opportunity to call on the government and all relevant authorities to come to our aid. We don’t want to take the law into our hands because we may be forced to do anything to protect our people.”
