Nigerians beg ASUU not to embark on strike

Nigerians have reacted to the threat by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to embark on another nationwide strike.

DAILY POST reports that ASUU on Thursday threatened to embark on a fresh industrial action if the Federal Government fails to show commitment towards implementing the 2019 Memorandum of Action.

ASUU National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi issued the threat during a briefing with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu while giving an update on the ongoing renegotiation with the government over the contending N25 billion on Wednesday.

Ogunyemi faulted the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, over his comment that the sum of N25 billion has been approved by the Federal Government for university lecturers as Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).

The threat by ASUU has since stirred reactions from Nigerians, especially students on social media.

Recall that the union sometime in February called off its strike.

Here are some comments gathered by DAILY POST on Twitter:

@hibrohadey1 “Why is this happening again ASUU? Can’t they just ignore everything about strike this year for goodness sake. Please ASUU!

@Ogbeninifemi “Buhari can you please pardon us and answer the ASUU. Was this the Next Level your Government promised us? We are tired please.”

@Ogbenidipo “Senators and House of Representative Members get welcome package (billions of Naira). Then, if they lose their next election, they get a takeaway package (billions of naira).

“Yet, the goverment is struggling to sort out ASUU and Nigeria remains the poverty capital of the world.”

@BeulahOnoh “Asuu Biko let’s not fight now
Many of us are in Final year.Dialogue small.”

@Kelechijio “Let them allow us graduate first na.. I don’t want it to enter 2020. Man gat plans so many.”

@NiyiUokun “They should think of the children and their parents. Most parents are daily wage earners but struggling to see to the Education of their children hoping that within stipulated years of study the child(ren) will graduate and their burden lessen. ASUU should please realise that they can’t get all they wanted because their are other areas demanding for attention. ASSU I think should also sponsor bill in the National Assembly restraining public official from sending their children to outside or to private universities, this will make them focus more.”

@Seyiglobal “ASUU threatening to embark on another nationwide strike action. One begins to wonder why they called off the strike in the first place. Has “power” exchanged hands. Why do they keep repeating the same MO for decades?

@Ofechime1 “Strike once ensure you get your demands done. Stop these rubbish back and forth.”

@OyegasiE “Obviously govt is using their head! How many times will they go on strike and nothing will come out of it.”

@Emokafe “The Devil call ASUU and the Demon call FG. Who suffer more. Who will pay the price. Watch out.”
