Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has alleged that politicians are already “buying” political positions in anticipation of the 10th National Assembly’s inauguration.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ndume expressed his concerns and called for the implementation of an “Unexplained Wealth Act.” This act would enable investigations, confiscations, and potential prosecution of individuals displaying wealth disproportionate to their income.
Ndume said, “Democracy is no longer there,” as political leadership positions are being claimed by “kleptocrats and plutocrats.” The senator claimed that he could have won the Senate President seat in 2019 if he possessed more financial resources.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker, who has served in the National Assembly for 20 years, is pushing for legislation to tackle corruption among politicians with dubious wealth.
Following the February 25th Presidential and National Assembly elections, APC legislative members-elect have been vying for coveted positions in both the red and green chambers. Prominent contenders for National Assembly leadership include Orji Kalu, Jibrin Barau, Godswill Akpabio, Dave Umahi, Ahmad Lawan, Abdulaziz Yari, and Osita Izunaso, among others.
