A lecturer at the Lead City University, Ibadan and Public affairs analyst, Dr. Bayo Busari, on Tuesday warned President Muhammadu Buhari that leaving Oyo State out the states where he declared total lockdown, will pose a dangerous threat to the fight against Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

Busari said that it is imperative that the Federal government review its position on the lockdown, which only affects Lagos, Ogun and FCT, leaving out Oyo, which has the third highest reported cases.

The Don made these declarations via a statement made available to DAILY POST in Ibadan, the state capital.

DAILY POST recalls that Buhari had ordered a total lockdown in Lagos and Abuja. He made the announcement during a nationwide broadcast on Sunday.

The President ordered suspension of all movements in Abuja and Lagos as from 11pm of Monday, March 30th. The restriction is also extended to Ogun state following its proximity to Lagos State.

But, Busari while reacting maintained that Oyo state should be included in the lockdown in view of its proximity to Lagos and Ogun States, the epicentre of the pandemic.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari, to without waisting more time, include Oyo state in the list of states where he declared total lockdown, as the number of people infected with Coronavirus also known as Covid-19 continue to increase.

Busari in the statement, argued that the state has international boundary with Benin Republic as well as being a gate way to the Eastern and Northern parts of the country.

He insisted that leaving Oyo state out the states where Buhari declared total lockdown will pose a dangerous threat to the efforts to flatten the curve of the spread.

“However, it is imperative that the Federal government reviews its position on the lockdown, which only affects Lagos, Ogun and FCT leaving out Oyo, which has the third highest reported cases.

“Equally, Oyo State was not captured in the palliatives announced for Lagos State and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) by President Muhammadu Buhari in his national broadcast. However, there is no doubt that the fight against the pandemic will task states, especially in terms of finances. This is why it is important that Oyo State benefits from the largesse that the Federal government is making available to fight the Covid-19.

“Equally, Oyo State should be included in the lockdown in view of its proximity to Lagos and Ogun States, the epicentre of the pandemic. Not only this, the state has international boundary with Benin Republic as well as being a gate way to the Eastern and Northern parts of the country.

“Leaving out the state will pose a dangerous threat to the efforts to flatten the curve of the spread. A stitch in time saves nine, that is the counsel that the Federal government should harken to without delay or being bi-partisan.”
