Yemen’s key port city of Hodeida was calm on Tuesday, hours after a ceasefire came into effect between government-allied forces and the country’s rebels.
The Red Sea city has been controlled by Houthi rebels since 2014 and is a lifeline for food deliveries to Yemenis across the country, where the UN says millions face famine because of a blockade.
A lasting ceasefire would be a major step in efforts to end Yemen’s devastating war, which has killed thousands and left 14 million people on the brink of famine.
