Why we are committed to leather technology – Nigerian Govt

The federal government on Monday restated its determination to ensure that greater emphasis were placed on leather technology for an enduring and sustainable development.

Speaking during the 2nd National Leather and Leather Products Policy Validation Workshop held in Aba, Abia State, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said leather technology would help transform the economy.

He said, “President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is determined to ensure that greater emphasis was laid on leather technology for the economic development of Nigeria.

“As this administration is focused to transform the economy, leather technology will go a long way and become a resource base for the nation because we are focused and determined to improve the economy.”

Onu pointed out that the legendary made in Aba products, among several other leather products showed that Aba remained Nigeria’s leading centre of indigenous manufacturing of leather products.

The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, in his speech, explained that the decision by his government to establish leather clusters in the state were aimed at taking the sector to the next level.

The Governor represented by his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu stated that Abia had come to be reputed as the commercial nerve centre of the South-East states and major producer of leather goods in Nigeria.

He and described the workshop as apt as it had a potential to harness the socio-economics activities in leather sector through the application of modern technology and innovations.
