President Bola Tinubu, in a nationwide broadcast commemorating Democracy Day, declared that individuals seeking elected positions must be capable of accepting defeat, implying that the joy of victory only truly belongs to those who can endure loss. The President stressed that his administration would not tolerate any unlawful interference from the judiciary that could undermine democracy.
Tinubu emphasized the value of democracy, stating that the liberty it grants should not be taken for granted. He urged citizens to guard and protect democratic freedoms like precious jewels, warning that their value is best understood when they are lost.
Speaking of the recently concluded elections, Tinubu stated that while some found the intensity of the contests and the resultant disagreements unattractive, these are signs of a thriving democracy. He further highlighted that democracy provides opportunities for every contestant, ensuring that those who lose today can win tomorrow.
Referencing the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, symbol of Democracy Day in Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized the importance of a reliable and strong judiciary to deliver justice and fortify institutions. He issued a stern warning against any attempts to truncate or weaken democracy through illegal orders.
President Tinubu, noting his commitment to governing with fairness, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to uphold the dignity of all Nigerians, pointed to the need for social and economic justice. He affirmed his determination to combat poverty through carefully planned social and economic policies.
Tinubu ended his speech by asking for a continued dedication to strengthening democracy, especially from those elected into public offices. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, promising to govern with fairness, respect for the rule of law, and a constant commitment to uphold the dignity of all Nigerians.
