A senior lecturer of the Delta State University, Abraka, Dr. Boniface Anyanwu was over the weekend abducted.
He was kidnapped alongside the son of Prof. Augustine Nwachukwu Obiaruku.
The abductors reportedly gained entrance into Dr Anyawu’s residence through the window.
They also carted away, two laptops, phones, unspecified amount of money and other valuable items belonging to the lecturer.
The lecturer and the other victim were later forced into the booth of Dr. Anyanwu’s Toyota Camry and driven to an unknown destination.
A colleague of the abducted lecturer, Prof. Elo Ibagere disclosed that the abducted lecturer is an asthmatic patient.
He expressed fears over the health status of Dr Anyanwu, who he described as humble, harmless stressing that he was loved by his students.
“Anyanwu is asthmatic. We don’t know the state of his health now. He was taken away without his medication”, he said.
Prof. Ibagere stated that the immediate family of the abducted lecturer is very apprehensive.
“The children of Dr Anyanwu are still scared. They’re still young. But they’re stable. His wife is also stable. No apprehension about her condition”, he added.
He noted that family members and close associates of the victims were still waiting for the negotiation with the abductors, whom he said were in touch with the wife.
Wife of the victim, Dr. (Mrs) Bona Anyanwu, said the abductors opened a channel of communication with the family on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, DELSU Chapter, Prof. Abel Diakparomre confirmed the report just as he called on the abductors to release the victims unconditionally.
“It’s true. He was kidnapped alongside Professor Nwachukwu’s son and they’re demanding N10m on each of them.
“We thought the era of kidnapping DELSU lecturers was over.
“We call on the state government to mobilize security for the rescue of the victims unconditionally.
“We’re lecturers, we don’t have money than our salaries. We don’t know why they target us. We’re worried the whole place is looking so insecure. The government should help us,” the ASUU boss pleaded.
The Delta State Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, could not be reached.
As at the time of filing this report, it was gathered that the Delta State Commissioner of Police has mobilized his men to effect the release of the victims from the kidnappers’ den.
