Senate mace snatched with presidency’s backing – Hon. Kaze

More reactions have continued to trail the recent snatching of the mace from the National Assembly, as a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Bitrus Kaze, has alleged that, “it is crystal clear that this criminality was planned and orchestrated with the full collaboration of the presidency”.

The former legislator also said the action has set a very dangerous precedence which is capable of truncating the nation’s democracy.

Kaze, in an exclusive interview with DAILYPOST in Jos, described the action as a “national disgrace”.

He said, “The rules, precedence and traditions are that a suspended member of the Senate or House of Representatives is a persona non grata anywhere within the precincts of the National Assembly.

“Therefore, that a suspended senator, not relying on any court pronouncement (if he has approached the courts) moved not just to the precincts of the National Assembly but indeed the Chamber of the Senate during plenary and with thugs is simply unthinkable.”

The former Reps member, who represented Jos South/Jos East Constituency between 2007 to 2015, said, “No word is sufficient enough to qualify this despicable novelty in the chequered history of Nigeria’s democracy.

“Watching the clips showing the desecration of the Red Chamber and the audacious removal of the mace; how the suspended senator contemptuously remained in the floor and how rather than promptly arresting and prosecuting them, the security agencies instead provided ‘protective cover’ to the perpetrators.

“It should be crystal clear that this criminality was planned and orchestrated with the full collaboration of the presidency, who media reports say mounted pressure on the Inspector General of Police, Idris to play along.

“PMB’s henchman in the senate incurred the wrath of his colleagues in the first place while trying to do the President’s bidding.”

The PDP chieftain warned that, “The national disgrace occasioned by this ignoble act sets a very dangerous precedence which is capable of truncating Nigeria’s democracy which the National Assembly symbolises.
