The Chairman Senate committee on communications, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, has asked the Universal Service Provision Fund to justify budget allocations and other interventions by government in taking communications network to the grassroots.

Speaking at the budget defense of Nigeria Communications Commission in Abuja, he said such development would bring an end to poor quality service in Nigeria.

He expressed shock that some communities in the country do not have service at all, saying the nation was not in a stone age.

“It is very unfortunate that our people across the country are complaining about poor quality of service despite all the encouragement and interventions the National Assembly has accorded the agency.”

“Worrisome and shocking is the sad discovery that some communities are not even connected at all to the network, and I want to remind the Universal Service Provision to be alive to their responsibilities,” he noted.

The lawmaker was emphatic that his committee will continue to support the USPF in the face of insecurity that has made communication a necessity rather than a luxury.

A member of the Committee, Senator Biodun Olujimi explaining her harrowing experiences while making and receiving calls noted that it was becoming an embarrassment for such to linger.

She urged the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to deal with the situation as a regulatory body.
