Police recover over 1000 arms, ammunition in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command on Thursday said it has recovered over 1000 firearms and assorted ammunition in different parts of the state.

The recovery, DAILY POST learnt, was in line with the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris’s directive to all state commands to mop up prohibited arms and ammunition in the system.

Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr. Abiodun Odude, while addressing journalists said the recovered arms and ammunition came from individuals who voluntarily submitted their firearms.

Others include those recovered from armed bandits in different parts of the state.

Odude said “Recently, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris worried by proliferation of firearms in different parts of the country directed all states Commissioners of Police and their supervising Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the 12 zones to immediately embark on mopping up and recovery of prohibited firearms and other illegal firearms and ammunitions in circulation.

“In total compliance with that directive, therefore, the Oyo state Command embarked on aggressive mop-up and recovery of the aforesaid arms, including ammunition.”

Odude while expressing delight at the level of achievement so far in the state, noted that the exercise, though ongoing, has been very successful as a cache of such arms and ammunition was recovered from different parts of the state within a short period.

While appealing to residents of the state to voluntarily submit their arms and ammunition to the police, the CP announced that the Command would soon embark on house to house search of such arms and ammunition.

Some of the arms and ammunition recovered according to him include 27 pump action guns, one imported single barrel gun, one imported pistol, 13 imported double barrel guns, 65 locally made single barrel guns, 21 imported pistols, 34 locally made pistols, six Ak 47 rifle, two sterling SMG and three Beretta rifle.

Others include 31 live cartridges, 60 rounds of AK 47 rifle, and 129 rounds of live ammunition.
