As he prepares for his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Plateau State Governor-elect Barr Caleb Mutfwang promises to engage local hunters and vigilante groups in efforts to address the wave of killings across the state.
Following a farewell visit to outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, Mutfwang spoke to reporters about his commitment to strengthening unity on the Plateau. He also emphasized the importance of improving relationships between herders and indigenous people to foster peace and unity among the state’s residents.
Mutfwang noted that the farmer-herder crisis is often misrepresented and pledged to promote peace in the state. He plans to involve the community in security processes and establish peace structures from the grassroots level.
“Vigilantes, hunters, and the existing security architecture will be effectively mobilized and integrated into the security structure,” Mutfwang said.
Dr. Para-Mallam revealed that, since July 2019, the Peace Foundation and the British High Commission have implemented several peace interventions in various states. Laing expressed gratitude for the stakeholders’ dedication to peace, noting that the delegation’s composition suggests a hopeful outlook for stronger peace-building and reconciliation initiatives in Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.
