PDP reacts to Okorocha’s move to install son-in-law as Imo governor

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has rejected moves by Governor Rochas Okorocha to install his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, as his successor in 2019.

Okorocha had declared on Monday that he would support Nwosu, who is his chief of staff and husband to his (Okorocha) first daughter, Uloma, to be governor.

Okorocha was quoted as saying “Uche Nwosu possesses all the qualities to be a good governor. He can exercise regard for the poor. He can make sacrifice.

“My happiness at the end of this administration is to see a worthy successor; successor who will not destroy free education and work for the state as if his life depends on that. I won’t impose anybody, but I am entitled to support anybody that I see can do the job.”

But reacting to the governor’s declaration, the Chairman of the PDP in the state, Charles Ezekwem on Tuesday said that the state had gone beyond the stage of family business.

He rejected the handing over of political power from father-in-law to his son-in-law after eight years.

Ezekwem said, “This family business will not work; the idea of Okorocha handing over power to his son-in-law after eight years will not work.

“This ‘familiocracy’ will be rejected because Imo people are highly educated and civilised.”

The PDP chairman further revealed that his party had started the process of ensuring that the party would reclaim the state in 2019.
