Osun rerun: How Buhari sent Fayemi back to Nigeria to meet Omisore ahead of election

President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly instructed the Governor-Elect of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to return to Nigeria over the Osun governorship rerun election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission ((INEC) will Thursday conduct supplementary election in four local governments.

Fayemi, who accompanied Buhari on his trip to the United Nations General Assembly, was asked to come back home to meet with governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The sole agenda of the meeting was to seek his support for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola.

Omisore is popular in areas where the election would hold especially at Garage Olode in Ife South Local Government Area where his father, Oba Olajide Omisore, is the traditional ruler.

On Tuesday, Fayemi visited Omisore in Ile Ife to woo him ahead of the rerun holding in seven polling units in four local government areas of Osun State on Thursday.

Omisore also met with APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, Reps Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun, Governors of Jigawa (Muhammad Badaru), Oyo (Abiola Ajimobi), Kano (Umar Ganduje), Ogun (Ibikunle Amosun), Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, among other top chieftains.

A source close to Fayemi told Punch that the discussion was fruitful.

The source said, “Dr. Kayode Fayemi went to discuss with Senator Omisore in Ife today. The meeting was not unconnected with the Osun rerun poll.

“Dr. Fayemi travelled to the US with President Buhari to attend the UN General Assembly and it was Buhari that asked him to return home to hold a meeting with Omisore on the matter.

“One vote is very important in this election, so every vote is important and that is the reason for the visit.”

DAILY POST recalls that Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, had on Monday visited Omisore to seek his support for PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke.
