Ondo lawmakers kick-against AAUA tuition increase

The Ondo State House of Assembly has said that it has nothing to do with the tuition increase announced by the Governing Council of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA).

It said the council did not carry the state legislature along before taking the decision.

Speaking with journalists on the development yesterday, the Chairman House Committee on Information, Mr. Fatal Olotu urged the protesting students to remain calm while the Assembly took a decision that would favour them.

He said, “We dissociate ourselves from the proposed new fees. We were not carried along, we are not aware of the new fees. All the announcement on the new fees would be revisited. ”

Also, the speaker of the House, Mr. Bamidele Oloyeloogun, said since the governing council failed to report to the House Committee on Tertiary Institutions, the Assembly would not support the increment.

Meanwhile, some students of the State owned-University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, have condemned the AAUA students and NANS leaders over the protest concerning the new fees. They said it was needless since all the higher institutions in the state had been paying higher tuition.

The spokesperson for OSUSTECH students, lfeoluwa Philips, while speaking with journalists in Akure, said that if the tuition of AAUA was reversed “our own tuition at OSUSTECH would have to be reduced to between N23,000 and N37,000 per session as well. What is sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander.”
