Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning

1. Ahmad Salkida, a journalist and close ally of the Boko Haram sect has disclosed that only 15 of the Chibok girls are still alive. Salkida who quoted a reliable source claimed that the other girls were caught up in military raids and are now dead. He further revealed that the 15 remaining girls have equally been married off to commanders of the sect and that it will be a difficult task to have them rescued.

2. Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi , on Saturday declared for the governorship race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress(APC), boasting that the party will defeat Governor Ayodele Fayose in the July 14 poll. He boasted that Fayose will be jailed after his (Fayemi) victory.

3. The Taraba State Government on Saturday expressed shock over alleged sudden withdrawal of military contingent deployed to enforce peace and security in southern part of the state. In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Gov Darius Ishaku on Media and Publicity, Mr. Bala Dan-Abu, the government lamented what it described as unceremonious withdrawal of soldiers from the operations.

4. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has travelled out of the country. Laolu Akande, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity made the announcement in a statement on Saturday morning. He said Osinbajo is representing Nigeria at an emergency meeting of leaders of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, holding in Lome, the capital city of Togo.

5. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited 13 more top officers of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for questioning over the alleged N2.5 billion scandal in the agency. A fact-sheet has showed that the 13 officers invited are Deputy Director( Finance); Assistant Director( Finance); PEO; ACT 1; SEO ACT1; CA; ACT; ACA; SA; another ACT and three others whose ranks were unspecified.

6. The Presidency has dismissed Ahmed Salkida’s latest information that only 15 of the remaining 113 abducted Chibok schoolgirls in captivity of Boko Haram are alive. Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, debunked Salkida’s claims in a statement in Abuja on Saturday. The presidential aide stated that Salkida was neither involved in the processes that resulted in the release of the over 100 Chibok girls nor in the ongoing efforts to secure the release of the remaining Chibok girls.

7. Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on the media to defend Nigerians who are suffering untold hardship under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government. He said the press should wake up as it presently speaks for the rich.

8. Officers of the Nigeria Police Mobile unit deployed to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Daudu, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday shot dead a pregnant teenager, simply identified as Queen Zoho, who stays in the camp.
The woman was killed during a melee an argument between youths of the area and the policemen.

9. The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, has stated that the North has been more impoverished under President Muhammadu Buhari than the last administration of President Goodluck Jonathan maintained that the region will still vote for Buhari in 2019 because they see him as the only one who can help bring their derelict to order.

10. The General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari’s for saying his wife, Aisha belongs to the living room, kitchen and the other room. He said the statement was an insult to African women.
