Muhammadu Buhari departs to Addis For AU Summit

President Muhammadu Buhari was due to depart Abuja on Thursday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU).

“Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation” is the theme of the AU Summit.

Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, released a statement saying that the President will participate in three High-Level meetings about peace and security, climate change, and the political situation in some West African countries.

It also said that the Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting of Heads of State and Government on the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (AUPSC High-Level AU) would be led by the President of South Africa, who is in charge of the Council for February.

The second is the meeting of the Committee of the Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), which the President of the Niger Republic currently leads.

An emergency summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS is scheduled to take place on the fringes of the annual sessions of the AU, where President Buhari is expected to be present.

President Buhari will speak at these events and present his National Statement at the opening session of the Summit, which brings together leaders from AU member countries and some non-AU countries and international institutions with ties to the AU in Addis Ababa.

On the trip, President Buhari will be joined by some Ministers and other high-ranking government officials.
