Kogi United stranded, may miss Aiteo Cup round of 64 match due to lack of funds

Reports reaching DAILY POST from the camp of Kogi United have it that the state-owned football team may not honor their Aiteo Cup Round of 64 match against Akure City FC in Ilorin on Tuesday.

This is due to lack of funds for the team to prosecute matches.

Kogi United reached the group stage in last year’s Aiteo Cup.

One of the players, who spoke with DAILY POST on the condition of anonymity, said it will be disastrous and shameful if the club failed to participate in the finals, having recorded tremendous success the previous edition.

“As I’m talking to you now, we are yet to hear anything whether we will travel to Ilorin tomorrow or not after rigorous training and preparation for this match.

“It will be a shameful thing if we ended up not going for this match, and I hope those in charge will do something before this embarrassing thing happens to Kogi United.”

DAILY POST on Sunday also gathered that, the team in the last six months have not received their monthly salary as they have been executing their current Nigeria National League Matches on empty stomach.

“We are heading towards the seventh months now without a penny from the state government. This is an act of wickedness. Sincerely speaking, we have been playing some matches now with garri in our stomach.

“Most of us now are debtors. We buy food on credits and many players are now laughing stock in the state.

“Our players can’t walk freely on the street because they are ashamed of humiliation,” the source added.

Efforts to reach the club chairman, Mallam Abdul Sule on the story proved abortive.
