Alhaji Murktar Bajeh (APC-Okehi), Majority Leader of the Kogi State House of Assembly, has resigned from his position in protest of the terrorism label placed on him and eight other colleagues by the state governor, Yahaya Bello.
On March 23, Governor Bello accused nine out of 25 assembly members of being terrorists due to their alleged involvement in the March 18 House of Assembly elections in the state. He subsequently requested that the legislature suspend the nine members, including the majority leader, and investigate their roles during the assembly election.
In a letter to the house, Bajeh announced his decision to step down from his position as majority leader. Speaker Mr. Matthew Kolawale read Bajeh’s letter during the plenary session and asked for comments.
Deputy Speaker Mr. Alfa Momoh-Rabiu then proposed a motion to nominate a replacement for Bajeh: Chief Whip Mr. Ahmed Dahiru. The speaker swiftly put the question to the members, and they unanimously accepted Dahiru as their new majority leader.
