Herdsmen attack: We have sent anti-open grazing bill to Edo Assembly – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo says it has forwarded an Anti-Open Grazing Bill to the House of Assembly for consideration.

Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Dan Orbih, disclosed this on Tuesday in Benin, while briefing newsmen.

Orbih said the party titled the proposed law “A Bill to Prohibit Open Rearing and Grazing of Livestock Administration, Regulation and Control and for other Matters connected there with.’’

He said the step was taken in view of the state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki’s pronouncement, banning night grazing by herdsmen in the state.

According to him, “the governor’s pronouncement has no force of law and was pretentious.”

The chairman said that the pronouncement of the ban on night grazing by herdsmen showed that the governor was unaware of events in the state as well as his powers as governor.

He stressed that “It is the duty of legislators to make laws. If Edo Government was serious in tackling the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers, it would have forwarded a bill to the legislature.

“Unless a law was enacted in that regard, the ban would not be affective as offenders would not be apprehended and prosecuted.”
