Godswill Akpabio Elected as Senate President of the 10th Assembly

Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, has been elected as the Senate President of the 10th Assembly. Akpabio, who was the chosen candidate of the All Progressives Congress, was teamed up with Senator Jibrin Barau, who has emerged as the Deputy Senate President.

The former governor of Zamfara, Abdulaziz Yari, is running as the Chief Whip of the ninth Senate, while Orji Kalu is his deputy. The election began earlier than the scheduled time of 10 a.m., commencing before 9 a.m.

The Clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal, presided over the Senate Chamber session, during which he called for nominations. Godswill Akpabio, senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North-East, was nominated for the position of the Senate President by the senator-elect for Borno South, Ali Ndume. Akpabio accepted the nomination. Elisha Abbo, senator-elect for Adamawa North, nominated Abdulaziz Yari, senator-elect for Zamfara West.

However, some senators objected to Yari’s candidacy for the position, arguing that he, as a first-time senator, should not be permitted to stand for the position. Following the casting of votes by lawmakers in alphabetical order, representatives from each team proceeded to count the votes.

Senators Adeola Solomon and Ndume represented Senator Akpabio, while Abbo and the senator-elect representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim, represented Senator Yari.
