Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has pledged his support for the National Population Commission (NPC) in conducting a precise and reliable census in the state.
The commitment was made when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, led the National Population and Housing Census Awareness Committee on a courtesy visit to Kano on Thursday. Dr. Garba Abari, Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), represented Mohammed during the visit.
Governor Ganduje assured that the state government would collaborate with pertinent stakeholders to encourage participation in the census exercise. He emphasized the importance of using data for policymaking and expressed concerns about the lack of a census since 2006.
The upcoming census, according to the governor, will provide a solid foundation for the Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to conduct more accurate surveys in the future.
Minister Mohammed mentioned that the committee was in Kano for a town hall meeting with key stakeholders before the forthcoming census. The National Population and Housing Census is scheduled to commence on May 3.
