Espanyol vs Real Madrid: Zidane reacts to 1-0 defeat

Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, has described their 1-0 defeat at Espanyol on Tuesday as “painful” but “undeserved”.

The LaLiga champions conceded with the last kick of the match, to record their fifth loss in the league this season.

Zidane named a much-changed side for the LaLiga fixture.

Cristiano Ronaldo was again rested, while Karim Benzema started on the bench, with Zidane keeping an eye on next week’s Champions League round of 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

With the game looking to end as a draw, Moreno converted Sergio Garcia’s cross to win it for the hosts.

“We did not deserve to win, but not to lose either. We began very well in the first half, had chances to score, but didn’t take them. The second half was worse, we did not find our play, the things that lately we have been doing well.

“It is a setback, but in the end we did not deserve this defeat. Espanyol had very few chances, but this is football, it’s a painful defeat, and I am sorry for the players as it is a bad result,” Zidane said.

The result leaves Real in third with 51 points, 14 behind leaders Barcelona.
