EPL: Chelsea to use Timo Werner as makeweight to sign Haaland

Chelsea is set to use striker, Timo Werner, as a ‘makeweight’ to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland this summer transfer window.

This claim was made by respected Arsenal hero, Paul Merson.

According to Merson, Chelsea will sign a proper striker like Haaland this summer because of Werner’s stuttering form this season.

Werner has struggled to live up to expectations at Chelsea after his big-money transfer from RB Leipzig last summer.

The German international has been a regular fixture in the first team for Chelsea, but he has only managed to score five goals and provided five assists in 28 Premier League games for the Blues so far this season.

“Timo Werner could be on borrowed time for Chelsea because it is not working out for him at all,” Merson told the Daily Star.

“I think he makes too many bad decisions when he gets into good positions. For the money they paid for him, he is a rough diamond who needs to work on his game.

“I do not know if he got by on pace alone in Germany, but he has not scored enough goals for Chelsea, and he has missed loads of chances.

“Now he is playing on the wing, and I know he helped make a goal against Atletico Madrid with a good cross.

“But there are times you watch him, and he goes on a run and tries to cross it when there is no-one in the box, and the defender blocks it anyway.

“I think Chelsea will sign a proper striker this summer, and I think they will use him as a makeweight.

“It makes sense to offer him to Borussia Dortmund as part of a deal for Erling Haaland.

“Dortmund will need a replacement if they sell Haaland and Werner is ready-made and proven in the Bundesliga. He would probably appeal to them.”

Chelsea’s next game is against West Brom on April 3 after the international break.
